The summer holidays were over and the date was now the first of September 2019. The Hogwarts great hall was filled with the chatter of anxious new students waiting to be sorted into one of four Hogwarts houses — Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. For some of the first years the horror was already over, and they were sitting comfortably at their house table, but for one student he still stood in the crowd.
Jake Padget had seen this happen every year since his birth, and he knew exactly what to expect. An old speaking hat would be placed on top of his head and would place Jake in the correct house. The huge hall with a ceiling that resembled a nights sky had shocked allot of the new first years, but it was common for Jake to see this. Of course Jake wasn't any ordinary student. Jake's mother was the Headmistress of Hogwarts, and his father taught the lesson muggle music. For Jake it didn't feel like he was a new student. He knew the castle well, as his father had taught him all of the secret passages as a toddler, and was already popular with many of the students. Jake had even been born in the castle's famous hospital wing.
"Hufflepuff!" shouted the Hogwarts Sorting Hat. The words echoed through the hall, as a tall spotted girl made her way over to the correct table. The clapping and cheers soon died down and the battered hat spoke again. "Jake Padget!"
The petrified boy shuffled his way through the crowd and made his way to the front where his uncle - the Headmaster stood with the sorting hat grasped through his fingers. It was pretty obvious that Jake was the son of the Headmistress. His dark brunette colored hair was spiked up, and his hazel eyes and face shape matched that of his mother, but Jake's personality had been acquired from his father. He could play many musical instruments, was very loud, enjoyed dough-nut sprinkles and did many strange things.
Whispers were coming from the crowd. "It's the Headmistress's son isn't it?". This just made things one hundred times worse for the boy, who was only eleven years of age and had never been in front of so many people before. He placed himself gently down on the wooden stool. Headmater Dagner placed the tatty hat on his head, squashing the spiked hair. Jake avoided the glare of his mother and father, who were both nervously sitting and waiting at the Teacher's table. They were more nervous than their son - this was their first after all.
An eerie voice spoke in Jake's head. "Son of the Headmistress eh?". The words of the hat made him quiver. Hogwarts was going to be awful. People were only going to judge Jake by his parents, even the sorting hat was doing this. "You are very much alike your father though, and so your house shall be." and at that the hat yelled "Slytherin!"
Jake gave a huge grin and made his way down to the Slytherin table, where many of Jake's older friends were cheering him. Jake quickly glanced over to the teachers table. His parents also seemed pleased with the sorting hat's decision. Jake Padget - a Slytherin just like his father.
Once everyone was sorted into their house Jake's mother and uncle both gave long boring speeches. The speeches were so boring Tré Padget was starting to fall asleep, but the drummer soon woke up when the Headmistress announced the start of term feast. For Jake it felt strange to be sitting at a student table. At lunch times he had always sat at the teacher table next to his mother and father. Hopefully the food would be just as good for students as it was for the staff.
Jake loved Hogwarts food. Just like his father he could eat lots of it. The start of term feast was often the highlight of Jake's year. He piled lots of food onto his plate, quickly finished and filled the plate up again. Hogwarts had finally began for the son of Headmistress Padget.
