I have to admit it, this was inspired by the Sorting of [enterkidsnamehere] by other members. I just think Madeline's story would be slightly more interesting Nah, just kidding. It's just sad really, not really more interesting.
Madeline looked around the grand hall she stood in, surrounded by some hundred other children, some of them looking expectantly, or awed, others looked like they were nearer to tears than to laughter. But not her, she wouldn't, she would be brave, no matter how scary or daunting this was. Daddy had told her not to worry, she would be just fine, going to Hogwarts would be fun. After all, he had gone there too, and he had had a great time, and just look at how great he had turned out. At the last words her father had smiled bitterly, a familiar look in his eyes. Maddy knew that look. It was one of hurt, when he wanted to go away and not come back for a long time.
He had done that before, several times. The first time he had she had been very young, no older than a year old, and she had been left with her mother's mother. Her mother had been dead for no longer than a year. Ever since, every once in a few years he would go away, go missing for some time, and she would be left at her grandmother's. Her grandmother would shake her head when her father would drop her off, looking sad. Why, she often asked him, why would he go? Consistently he would reply because he had to. It wasn't that she did not like being with her grandmother, she loved hearing stories about her mother, and about her father, when he had been younger.
She knew he wasn't like other people, she knew he had to leave her at least once a month. It would be too dangerous for her to be near him, even if he took that stinking potion. Her grandmother told her about when her mum had still been been alive and her dad had been happy. She knew the story by heart, really, it was like a fairy tales, sometimes, but it never seemed to cheer her father up like it did her. She told the story in her mind.
"Quite some years ago your mother went to study magical creatures. She loved animals, and nature. No wonder she was always outside and after she had graduated from Hogwarts, she went out by herself. And a pretty things she was. Dark hair, with curls, just like yours. Of course, your hair is not that dark, but that is because of your father, of course. And a skin, like cream, dear, like cream and roses. Sometimes I wonder if that was why she has gone, because she was so pretty. Surely the angels wanted her back." Her grandmother always smiled at this point, reminiscing about her daughter. After a few minutes she would shake her head and continue. "And your father. Well, you might not believe it now, but he was a handsome boy too, really, he was. With long hair, as red as it still is. And perhaps a little bit vain. Now, how they met is a strange story, and you might not want to believe it, but it is really true."
"Now your mother had been wandering through the forest, and the night before had been a full moon. You know what that means, don't you?" Maddy nodded at herself, her eyes closed, for a moment slipping out of the silent thoughts, hearing a name being called out. "Well, you father was in that forest too. And they met. Simple as that. Your mum was curious as to why he was there and your dad was curious why she was there. Well, from one thing came another and they married. It was really beautiful, Maddydear, I wish you could have seen it. But of course, that was before you were born. From that moment on the two of them went everywhere together. Your father would go with your mother when she was out in the field, and your mother would stay with your father when it was a full moon. Good thing for the potion, am I right?" Maddy would nod again and listen intently, even though this was the saddest part.
"About two years after they married, they were going to have you. You've no idea how happy they were. And your father... At first he was a little afraid, for all they knew you would be like him, but later on, when they found out that was not the way werewolves became, he lightened up a great deal. You know the rest of the story. When you were born things went wrong. You lost your mother, even before you got to know her, your father lost his wife, and I lost my daughter." Her gran would hug her tightly to her at this part. "But I gained a granddaughter." She would smile, and quickly get up to go and get some biscuits. and to wipe her eyes, Maddy always expected.
Then, suddenly, she was snapped out of her reverie. Her name boomed through the hall and she stumbled forward, toward the little stool in the front of the hall. "ALVIN, MADELINE!"
