Kathleen reacted instinctively. Not a moments in decision crossed her path as she sprinted the short distance to her destination: between the duelers to block the spell. She made it there just as the jet of green light hit her squarely in the chest. Celeste's horror-stricken eyes of malice caught hers as she fell slow motion to the floor. It was as if the world had stopped breathing in order to give her more time. Her head hit the floor with a sickening crunch and her head lolled to the side, catching Ashlyn's tearful face of rage, disbelief, and grief in her killer's stead. Blood trickled from the corner of her already deadening lips and one last crimson tear slid down her alabaster cheek to join the rest of her no longer warm blood. Her limbs stuck out at awkward angles due to her fall and her eyes had rolled to the back of her cracked head. With a note of finality, Kathleen Laurenia Abernish's 8" mahogany and unicorn hair wand clattered out of her limp right hand and onto the cold forest floor.

"No..."
Her own voice came to her from across a great distance, her world was in a white fog, she couldn't understand how she could have let it get this far. It couldn't have happened. Ashlyn collapsed onto her knee, robed billowing behind her, and began weeping from her bright green eyes.
"Rennervate..." she muttered incoherently. Kathleen was just sleeping. That was all. Ashlyn just needed to wake her up... "Rennervate," she said, this time stronger and louder. Why wasn't this working? "Rennervate. Rennervate! RENNERVATE!" she screamed more and more frantically. Still Kathleen's lifeless body remained motionless. Ashlyn's tears came more fervently now. Why wasn't she waking up? She couldn't be...
No. Ashlyn wouldn't even let the thought enter her mind. If only it wasn't for that curse... The curse.
An unbelievable fury burned through her, like a match dropped on a pile of dry leaves, lighting a vengeance deep inside her chest that crackled with the intensity of undeniable wrath and loathing. Celeste had moved closer to the mangled corpse with her hand over her mouth trance-like so that when Ashlyn jumped to her feet, with eyes filled of hatred and revenge, her wand whipped to the spot between Celeste's eyes with a dark blur.
"CRUCIO!"

The blast hit her in a tremor of pain Celeste hit the floor with less than grace, writhing in excruciating agony while her eyes rolled to the back of her head in a stomach-jolting repeat of Kathleen's body position. She deserved it. In fact, Celestial knew she deserved so much more than this menial torture. As soon as it had started, however, it stopped. Celeste fell to her side wheezing with an uncomfortable feeling rising in her stomach. Yep, definitely rising.
With a large hack, Celeste retched. The sight of Kate's bloody body, the pungent stench of death already settling on the clearing, and the torture curse combined finally overheaved her and she began an emotional breakdown.

She couldn't do it. As soon as Ashlyn had said the curse, she had lifted it. If she had continued to torture Celeste, she would be no better than her sister's killer. With a chill that ran the length of her spine, Ashlyn Abernish fainted.
